Do you ever freeze up after you stick your foot in your mouth?

I did that today, embarrassed myself after church service finished. I asked someone if it was their birthday. I had heard a relative of theirs say it was someone’s birthday today, but I didn’t hear the name of the person whose birthday it is, so I made an assumption. Guess what – it’s not their birthday! Oops!

If you know me, I acted from not wanting to miss telling them happy birthday if it’s their birthday. But it isn’t their birthday, and their answer to my question embarrassed me deeply. Other people had been nearby and had heard. So I froze. I was completely paralyzed for a few minutes!

When I began to recover, I walked away, toward a wall. The other people had already moved along. I had to tell myself what to do, what steps to take next, what direction to go, until I found a group I’m comfortable with.

That embarrassment stayed with me a good 20 minutes or more, until I was in the car with my husband and could talk it over with him.

I’d love to say I’ve grown out of this type of thing, but apparently not! And you wonder why I don’t talk much!

Well, my day will get better! I’ll heat up my stew and eat and relax with my family. And I’ll still praise the Lord!

How about you? What’s your day been like?
